EMI Could Cut 2,000 Jobs in Recorded Music Division

EMI, the British company that the Sex Pistols sang about in the late 1970s, and who were the home to the Beatles, is planning to cut as much
as 2,000 jobs in their recorded music division. They’re claiming reasons such as online piracy, falling CD sales, a poor release schedule, and losing two of its biggest acts: Radiohead and Paul McCartney. They might also be losing Robbie Williams and Coldplay. (All this happened before or around when the new management, Terra Firma, took over.)

I haven’t paid as much attention as I used to, but this label did have many acts that were important to the history of rock and roll. (I’ll have to do some digging to back up this claim.)

Of course, other big artists left other labels last year as well. The shakeup of the music industry has begun. Artists are realizing that the money is in touring and merchandise - where it’s always been and always will be. At least until transporter devices or replicators come into existence and someone hacks those.
