Brad Pitt’s “Make It Right” Project

On Saturday, large pink blocks, as big as houses, went up in the Lower 9th Ward. These blocks are symbolic for what’s to come - a neighborhood in New Orleans, destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, will be rebuilt. The lot has been empty since the neighborhood was destroyed by the floods.

Brad Pitt is planning to rebuild this neighborhood with his “Make It Right” project, details of which he will share later today (Monday, December 3, 2007). His basic plan is to build about 100 affordable, ecologically sound homes. The houses will go up where the pink blocks are, now.

“Right now there are scattered blocks, like they were scattered by fate’s hand, symbolic of the aftermath of the storm… But we will be flipping the homes, essentially righting the wrong,” said Brad. He thinks that with time, New Orleans will thrive again, and he hopes that this is a push in that direction.

In early November, Brad pledged $5 million to Make it Right, and challenged others to also make contributions. Environmental Therapist and producer Steve Bing also contributed $5 million. The homes are being designed by a group of architects led by New Orleans architect John Williams.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt already own a home in New Orleans. They stayed their during the filming of Brad’s film, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and they are staying there again as they lend their support to the project.
